Google Ads and Microsoft: The Last Manual Levers Disappear
In short

Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising are removing the last manual settings. Two changes this autumn show the direction: AI Max becomes the default for search campaigns, and Microsoft drops the maximum cost per click for new campaigns.
1) What is changing
Google – AI Max for Search. AI Max is out of beta. Campaigns with automatically created assets and campaign-level broad match have been auto-upgraded since September 2026; the Dynamic Search Ads upgrade was moved to February 2027 (Google).
Microsoft – no more max CPC on new campaigns. Since 1 October 2026, new campaigns using Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value or Maximize Clicks can no longer set a max CPC. Existing campaigns keep it; portfolio strategies, Target Impression Share and eCPC are exempt (Search Engine Journal). Microsoft says the cap gives the bidding system conflicting instructions.
2) Where control now sits
When bids and queries become automatic, control moves to three places:
- Conversion data. The system optimises for what it is told. Wrong, duplicate or worthless conversions become the most expensive mistake. Server-side tracking and values instead of plain counts become mandatory.
- Targets and budgets. Without max CPC, target CPA/ROAS and the daily budget are the real guardrails.
- Assets and exclusions. What may go into the ad, which brand, competitor and negative terms apply — that remains human work.
3) Checklist for the coming weeks
- Which Google campaigns are already on AI Max — deliberately or automatically?
- Which Microsoft campaigns do you want to keep as they are? (Existing campaigns keep their max CPC.)
- Do reported conversion values match revenue in the CRM?
- Is there a holdout test showing what the automation adds?
Conclusion
Platforms remove manual levers because they collide with their own bidding systems. Control does not disappear; it moves: to clean data, clear targets and good assets. Invest there and you keep control.
