Inngest
Inngest is an event-driven platform for durable execution. Developers write ordinary functions in TypeScript, Python or Go; Inngest handles queueing, retries, state persistence, scheduling and observability without you operating your own workers.
Inngest runs functions in individually checkpointed steps: after a failure a run resumes at the last successful step instead of starting over. For agents that means an interrupted run is not a total loss.
Explanation
The central building block is the step. Every step is checkpointed, its result memoised and not re-executed on restart. That is exactly what almost every first agent prototype lacks: a run across twelve tool calls fails at number nine and the agent expensively starts over. With steps it resumes where it broke. Second point, important for governance: a run can pause for hours waiting for human approval without holding resources. An approval step thus becomes part of the mechanics rather than an appendix in a process manual. Inngest does not replace evaluation or tracing tools for model quality — it provides reliability, not content quality.
Marketing Relevance
For accountable owners durable execution is the difference between an agent that occasionally works and a process you can commit to. Only once resumption, retries and waiting for approvals are built in can turnaround times and cost be planned reliably.
Example
A localisation run adapts campaign copy for eight markets. Each market is a step. If the connection drops at the sixth market, only the missing markets re-run. Before publication the run pauses and waits for legal approval.
Common Pitfalls
Steps must be cut so that a retry does nothing harmful — a step that sends an email must not run twice. And execution observability is not quality measurement: model quality needs an additional evaluation tool.
Origin & History
Inngest emerged as an answer to the fragility of hand-built queues in serverless environments. As multi-step agents took hold from 2024, durable execution moved to the centre; the vendor now explicitly promotes durable agents and offers a Model Context Protocol interface for coding agents.

Background processing of forms, emails and files.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does durable execution concretely give agents?
It prevents an interruption from voiding the whole run. Every completed step is preserved, retries only cost for the failed part, and waiting for approvals consumes no compute.
Inngest or Temporal?
Inngest is faster to adopt and strongly tailored to serverless environments. Temporal is open source, broader across languages and more powerful when self-hosted, but markedly more effort to operate.
Does Inngest replace an agent framework?
No. It provides reliable execution, not agent logic. The two combine: the framework for tools and the loop, Inngest for steps, retries and schedules.
