LlamaIndex
LlamaIndex is an open-source data framework for LLM applications providing connectors to data sources, chunking, index structures, retrieval strategies and answer synthesis with source attribution.
LlamaIndex is a framework for the path from raw documents to an answerable question: ingest, chunk, index, retrieve, cite. It takes over the thankless work that actually determines the quality of a RAG application.
Explanation
Most bad RAG answers come not from the model but from preparation: chunks too large, tables lost, metadata missing, no reranking. That is exactly where LlamaIndex focuses. It provides building blocks for ingesting from files, databases and APIs, for different chunking strategies and for retrieval with reranking. The vector database stays swappable — LlamaIndex is the layer above it.
Marketing Relevance
For companies with sprawling document estates — policies, manuals, contracts, product data — preparation is the real effort. Solve it cleanly and you get answers with source attribution, i.e. something a department can verify. Without sources, an answer is worthless in a corporate context.
Example
4,000 PDF pages of product documentation become an index with chunk sizes following chapter structure, metadata for product and version, and a reranking step before answering. The assistant cites chapter and page for every statement.
Common Pitfalls
Defaults are a prototype, not a product: fixed chunk lengths cut through tables and lists, metadata is missing and quality is never measured. Second point: a framework is no substitute for evaluation — without test questions with expected sources, every improvement is just a claim.
Origin & History
The project started in 2022 as GPT Index and became, with the 2023 RAG wave, one of the two major frameworks alongside LangChain. From 2024 agent and workflow building blocks were added, but the focus stayed on the data side.

Marketing Use Cases
Knowledge base from PDF, Office and intranet estates with source attribution.
Retrieval across several sources with filtering by product, market and version.
Analysis of tenders and contracts with cited passages.
Frequently Asked Questions
LlamaIndex or LangChain?
They can be combined. LlamaIndex leans towards data preparation and retrieval, LangChain and LangGraph towards chains and agent state.
Do I need a vector database for this?
Not strictly for small corpora, practically always for production. LlamaIndex stays swappable across pgvector, Qdrant, Weaviate or Pinecone.
