    AI Psychosis

    Also known as:
    AI Speculation Trap
    Future Fixation
    Model Extrapolation Spiral
    Updated: 9/18/2026

AI psychosis is not a clinical diagnosis but a colloquial term from developer and AI communities. It describes a behaviour pattern: discussions and decisions orient themselves around presumed capabilities of coming model generations while the value of already available tools stays untested.

    Quick Summary

Colloquial term for perpetually extrapolating future model leaps instead of working productively with available tools. The counterpart to paralysis by p(doom) — both prevent decisions in the present.

    Explanation

Both extremes have the same effect. Putting p(doom) at the centre defers decisions, because all action looks meaningless before a presumed catastrophe. Losing yourself in extrapolations of future leaps defers decisions as well — just with the justification that the next model will solve the problem anyway. In companies this appears as an investment freeze: no pilots, because the next version is awaited; no process work, because agents will supposedly make it redundant; no measurement, because everything will change regardless. The way out is unspectacular and identical in both cases: a question about your own use case instead of about the future of the technology. What does this step cost today, how often does it occur, what failure rate is tolerable, and what changes measurably when an agent takes it over? Asking that way needs no forecast about model generations, just a bounded pilot with a baseline and an acceptance criterion.

    Marketing Relevance

For decision-makers the term is useful for naming a conversation pattern that blocks projects. When a discussion about agents runs only on coming models, the link to a use case with cost, frequency and failure cost is missing — and with it the basis for any approval.

    Example

A team defers automating format adaptation for the third time because a new model generation is expected. A four-week pilot with today's technology, a baseline measurement and a clear acceptance criterion would have shown in the same time whether the step holds.

    Common Pitfalls

The term is easily misused to dismiss legitimate caution — data protection, security and liability questions are not psychosis. The reverse accusation is equally useless. And since there is no clinical definition, the word does not belong in descriptions of people, at most in the description of a discussion pattern.

    Origin & History

The term emerged from 2024 in online discussions as a polemical label and is used inconsistently — partly for speculative future fixation, partly for unhealthy attachment to chatbots. In this sense it took hold in 2025/2026 as the counterpart to the p(doom) debate: two stances that each distract from the concrete use case.

    Marketing Use Cases

    1

Spotting conversation patterns that permanently defer pilot decisions.

    2

Bringing sweeping debates back to measurable use cases.

    3

Prioritisation: evaluate today's tools instead of assuming future ones.

    4

Setting up bounded pilots with baseline and acceptance criteria.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is AI psychosis a medical term?

No. It is a colloquial, inconsistently used term from online debate with no clinical definition. Useful as a description of a discussion pattern, not as a label for people.

How does it differ from p(doom)?

p(doom) is a subjective probability for a catastrophic outcome and often leads to paralysis. AI psychosis describes the opposite extreme, speculative extrapolation of future capabilities. Both replace the question about your own use case.

    What is the practical countermeasure?

A bounded pilot: one work step, a measured baseline, a defined error tolerance, a fixed duration and one accountable person for acceptance. That decides value regardless of the next model generation.
